About Raphael Aidoo

Mr. Raphael Aidoo is a PhD Candidate of the Bioresource Engineering program at McGill University working under the Sustainable Agri-food Systems Engineering Lab (SASEL). He holds a bachelor’s degree in food science and technology from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and a master’s degree in Bioresource Engineering from McGill University.

Raphael’s educational background has shaped his research trajectory, evolving from nutrition and food quality optimization to interdisciplinary research that applies science and engineering principles to provide innovative, sustainable, and evidence-based food system solutions. He has accumulated extensive research, industrial, and entrepreneurial experience in food quality and safety, product development, and fermentation modeling through dedicated engagements since 2016. His expertise also extends to industrial bioprocess modeling, eco-efficiency trade-off optimization, multidimensional sustainability assessment, and circular bioeconomy modeling—central themes in both his master’s and PhD research. These experiences have provided him the opportunity to work with organizations like the National Research Council Canada on the Sustainable Protein Production program and earned him scholarships and fellowships from prestigious institutions like the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. Raphael’s primary research ambition is to support the transformation of global food systems, particularly in Africa, through the development of circular value chains, processes, and frameworks, supported by sector-adaptable digital decision support tools.

Over the years, Raphael has shown sustained commitment to African food system transformation through impactful research and service. His research contributions include recent publications on bioeconomy as a pathway for African food system transformation and the exploration of circular bioeconomy for augmenting nutrition security in Africa—conceptually dubbed the Nutrition-Sensitive Circular Bioeconomy. He also serves as a student researcher on multiple African-centered, EU-sponsored food system sustainability projects. His service contributions include active participation in ANGASABE, where he serves as a committee member on both the mentorship and publicity committees.

He currently holds the position of publicity lead. Raphael believes this leadership role gives a unique opportunity for him to advance his commitment to Africa’s sustainable food system transformation in alignment with ANGASABE’s goals.
